Youth Climate Story: Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico as a Category 5 storm on September 20, 2017. More than 250,000 people have become climate refugees and left the island.

Keishla resides in Manatí, and helps take care of her grandmother and great-grandmother in Carolina. She feels most impacted by Hurricane Maria through her grandmother who has been forced to leave the island as a climate refugee because of impacts left by the storm. She has worked towards environmental justice, serving as a Sierra Club Student Coalition Youth Leader and is studying law in Puerto Rico.
